Indian Grinding Rock and Calaveras Big Trees State Parks To Reopen Friday Sept 18
COLUMBIA, Calif. – Calaveras Big Trees and Indian Grinding Rock state parks are open for all day-use and overnight recreational activities effective Friday September 18, 2015 after being closed because of the Butte Fire. Day-use and camping opportunities at Calaveras Big Trees will be limited to the North Grove of the park, with the Parkway and South Grove access closed until fire activities conclude.
The parks were closed as a precautionary measure early Thursday, September 9, 2015 out of concern for visitor safety as the parks were located in an area under an advisory evacuation order for the fast moving fire.
California State Parks continued to monitor the Butte Fire and has worked around the clock to enhance fire clearance and other preparedness measures around sensitive historic structures and other natural and cultural resources.
Calaveras Big Trees State Park and Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park sustained no fire damage.
The amazing commitment of the California State Parks team and 24-hour collaboration with the Cal Fire Incident Command and allied agencies in communication, planning, and response to the Butte Fire was paramount in providing for the public’s safety while protecting California’s precious cultural and natural resources.
