Backpacking

Named the “Land of Fire & Ice” by a 19th century emigrant crossing this part of the Sierra Nevada, Alpine County offers hundreds of miles of backpacking and hiking trails in two Federal Wilderness areas and three National Forests.

Day Hiking

96% of Alpine County is public land, including the Carson-Iceberg and Mokelumne Wildernesses, and portions of the El Dorado, Humboldt-Toiyabe, and Stanislaus National Forests. There are hundreds of great trails and or destinations for a day hike.

Fishing

Many lakes and stream locations to choose from, Alpine County is a fisherman’s dream. Fish the banks of the Carson river, Explore the shoreline of Caples Lake or hike into hidden fishing holes and make it a weekend adventure.

Any person in California over the age of 16 needs to purchase a CA sport-fishing license.
This applies to any person residing in California state for a period of 6-months or more.
When you purchase a California sport-fishing license, these will be valid across the state and encompass both freshwater and saltwater fishing

Camping

Three dozen campgrounds, plus thousands of acres of dispersed camping, makes Alpine County a favorite with campers. A range of facilities are available, from primitive sites along a rushing stream to lakeside campgrounds with swimming, fishing, and boating.

Riding / Cycling

With miles of scenic trails and highways, cycling enthusiasts come from around the world to ride in Alpine County. Road cyclists are drawn to the winding, scenic highways, including those which cross Carson Pass, Ebbetts Pass, Monitor Pass, and the Pacific Grade.

Scenic Travel

Alpine County is home to three great Scenic routes.

HWY 4 – Ebbett’s Pass is a Registered National scenic Byway. And one of our favorite scenic routes on the West Coast. Route 89 travels Cuts through the County from Lake Tahoe then through Markleville and over Monitor Pass. Carson Pass HWY 88 is also recognized as California Scenic byway with a beautiful set of passes and Mountain Lakes along the roadside.

Disc Golf

With 3 disc golf courses – one at each corner of the County – Alpine County is becoming a destination of choice for disc golfers. The game offers fun for all; it is easy to learn, equipment is inexpensive, and it’s free to play at each of our locations.
