Lake Tahoe Summer Recreation is Set to Begin with Opening of Several Favorite Tahoe Destinations
South Lake Tahoe, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin opening recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin on April 30, 2016. Lake Tahoe Recreation is an all season paradise, however in the summer season the Forest service staffs several great locations around Lake Tahoe to help people enjoy the multiple recreational opportunities including camping, site-seeing and beach enjoyment.
Even with the winter weather still looming at times in the spring forecast, the Lake Tahoe region is preparing for a great summer recreation season. Starting April 3oth, several common destinations on Lake Tahoe the surrounding area will begin opening with public access and public facilities.
April 30th openings
- Kiva Picnic area
- Baldwin and Nevada beaches
- Big Meadow trailhead
- McKinney Rubicon Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) area
- Sawmill Pond, Eagle Falls, Chimney Beach and Secret Harbor parking areas
May 10th Openings
- The Sandpit OHV area
May 13th Openings
- William Kent campground
- Kaspian campground
- Meeks Bay campground
- Bayview campground
- Fallen Leaf campground
- Nevada Beach campground
May 14 Opening
- Taylor Creek Visitor Center parking area, grounds and restrooms
May 25 Opening
- Luther Pass Campground
May 27 Opening
- Pope Beach
June 1 Opening
- Blackwood Canyon and Watson Lake campgrounds
The Tallac Historic Site opens April 30, 2016, and will be staffed beginning Saturday, May 21, 2016 for Memorial Day weekend.
Until sites officially open, there is no parking, trash removal or restroom facilities available. Be sure to pack out all trash and where pets are allowed, clean up after your animal. Until parking lots open, please park your vehicle off the roadway, avoid parking on vegetation, and do not block access gates.
Before recreation sites fully open to the public, the Forest Service must hire crews and staff to manage the sites, clean up from winter, remove safety hazards and wait for the danger of a freeze to pass before turning on water systems.
