Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Extends Temporary Closure Through Monday Only- Still No Campfire Are Allowed anywhere
Minden NV , September 14, 2010 – Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest system lands located in California on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts will reopen to the public on Tuesday morning after a temporary emergency closure went into place on September 10th due to an unprecedented and dangerous fire situation in the state of California.
“We understand how important access to our National Forest is and after assessing the situation, we have decided to keep the closure in place through Monday, September 14th only. The Forest will reopen on Tuesday.” Said Forest Supervisor Bill Dunkelberger. “However, a very serious fire threat still exists, and we are asking that the public be extra cautious when recreating not to spark another wildfire.”
Wildfire prevention is important now more than ever. With the current fire activity across the west, fire resources are engaged in multiple incidents already and may not have the capacity to suppress new fire starts. With the combination of extremely dry vegetation and the current and predicted winds, any new fire will likely exhibit extreme behavior as was recently experienced with the Slink Fire on the Bridgeport Ranger District. Over 400 firefighters continue working to contain the 26,440-acre Slink Fire west of Coleville, California.
The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest remains in Stage 2 Fire Restrictions. No campfires are allowed anywhere on the Forest, including within developed campgrounds, day use areas, and dispersed camp areas.
It is also prohibited to use a chainsaw after 1 p.m. or to operate or park a vehicle on dry vegetation. To view the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions, visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd778062.pdf.
The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest would like to thank our partners and the public for their cooperation during the temporary closure, as well as their understanding of this monumental fire threat. As a reminder, the Slink and Mahogany Fire areas, along with Dog and Long Valley portions of the Loyalton Fire are still closed.
