Temporary Big Stump Picnic Area Closures Began Monday 8/10
SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif. August 11, 2020 – Temporary weekday closures of Big Stump Picnic Area in the Grant Grove area of Kings Canyon National Park began Monday, August 10 in connection with a trail improvement project. This project will modify the existing Big Stump Trail to meet accessibility standards, adding about 1,400 feet of gently sloping and firm-packed trail. Big Stump Trail begins at Big Stump Picnic Area and drops over 150 vertical feet into Big Stump Basin where visitors can see evidence of historic logging of giant sequoias.
Work will begin on Monday, August 10 and continue through the fall as weather allows. Weekday closures will be in place each Monday at 7 a.m. through Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The area will reopen for weekend use with minor visitor impacts at 5:30 p.m. each Thursday. A small portion of the parking lot and two picnic sites will be fenced off for equipment storage on weekends.
On days when Big Stump Picnic Area is closed, visitors are encouraged to use Columbine Picnic Area about three miles east on Highway 180 near Grant Grove Village.
