Over 4 Feet Of Snow On Multiple Mountain Resorts Causing Much Excitement & A Few Headaches
January 4, 2017 – The Sierra Mountain Snow Reports to this point in the season have left many wondering if we were ever going to see the type of snow we saw last year. As experts head out in the Sierra Today to check snow pack for the water/drought conditions in California and Nevada, the Sierra has awaken to a dream snow system which has already dropped over 4 feet of snow on many Sierra Mountains.
However, with Powder Glory calling skiers upward, the reality of transportation and safety set up for just a few headaches today. Already today Hwy 50 out of Carson City is Closed because of Accidents, Mt Rose HWy out of Reno is Closed because of an Avalanche, HWy 88 near Kirkwood has been closed also during this storm, Kingsbury Grade out of Carson Valley is closed, because of giant Sink Hole that is forming and because of the snow it will not be fixed anytime soon. In Mammoth reports of multiple road issues as unprepared driver find themselves stranded in the middle of the road. Of course, I-80 is touch and go with winter storm slowing things to a crawl or a stop depending on the hour, as of now it is open again today.
As far as resorts go, Alpine Meadows is closed today, Squaw Valley is trying to open part of the mountain but is on hold, Kirkwood looks like it is skiing, Heavenly Ski Resort had 36″ in Last 24 hours and are skiing today as it continues to dump. Northstar has 18″ of new snow and still dumping, they are skiing today. Sierra at Tahoe is skiing and enjoying life with 2 feet of new powder. Mammoth is skiing, Bear Valley is skiing. Boreal is Skiing.
If you are going check your routes before you leave. The powder from this storm is epic. But the Great News is More is coming this weekend.
It looks like the Sierra will have a fantastic start to 2017 for ski season and Future Water Table reports.
