Sierra Rec Magazine – August 29, 2022 – A couple of weeks ago, my friends and I embarked on a hiking adventure in the breathtaking Mono Pass regions. Little did we know that this journey would lead us to encounter the talented regional photographer, Michael Weindel, returning from his exploration of the magnificent Koip Pass. After approximately 16 miles of traversing the stunning landscapes of Mono Pass, we had the pleasure of engaging in a conversation with Michael about his thrilling adventures.
Impressed by his tales, I couldn’t resist asking if he would be willing to share some of his captivating images with us. Given that my own explorations had never taken me beyond Parker Pass and Parker Pass Lake, Michael graciously agreed. Just yesterday, I received an email filled with a plethora of stunning images from his Koip Pass expedition, and I am thrilled to invite you to join us on this mesmerizing photo journey.
Discovering Koip Pass in the Ansel Adams Wilderness
Nestled in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Koip Pass stands tall at an impressive elevation of 12,968 feet. The trail to Koip Pass offers an exhilarating day hike, spanning 17.9 miles round trip with an elevation gain of over 3900 feet, beginning at Tioga Pass/Mono Pass Trailhead.
A Scenic Route through Yosemite’s High Country
As adventurers trek along the trail, they traverse Yosemite’s high country, passing through Mono Pass and ascending over Parker Pass, which sits at a lofty 11,000 feet. The journey then takes a scenic route into the Ansel Adams Wilderness, leading hikers past a chain of unnamed small lakes and across Parker Creek.
