Death Valley’s Artist Palette

Discover the Unique Colors of the Artist Palette – A Photographers Dream

Sprinkled with green, yellow, red and purple, this prismatic terrain was formed by mineral-rich volcano deposits. Visitors have choices when visiting this location of Hiking into the Palette or sitting on the rim at the roadside and watching the landscape colors change with the light.

Although no marked trail is in this area there is plenty of areas to venture off into the desert floor and inspect the unique features of the area.

Artist Drive

Located on artist drive in Death Valley National Park visitors flow in one direction in a 9 mile loop. Artist Loop winds through hills carved by the erosive power of water, and gives vistas of both the rugged Black Mountains and swirling white salt flats. While no maintained trails exist along this loop, several pull outs provide safe parking areas from which to explore this unique landscape on foot.  Artist’s Drive is located off Badwater Road, north of Devil’s Golf Course and south of Furnace Creek.

When To Visit

Although Artists Drive and Artists Palette are beautiful any time of day, sunrise and sunset provide additional shadows and changing light, further enhancing the allure of this incredible place.
