Active Sierra: Your Gateway to Adventure and Exploration

The Sierra Nevada isn’t just a place you visit—it’s a place you experience. From quiet alpine lakes to high mountain passes and forested backroads, this range offers something different every time you head out. One weekend might be a laid-back camping trip by the water, the next a long day on the trail or a cold morning casting a line in a mountain creek.
What makes the Sierra different is the variety. You’re not limited to one type of adventure. You can hike, fish, camp, ride, climb, or simply explore—and often all in the same trip. This page is your starting point to find those experiences and plan your next day (or weekend) in the mountains.

Sierra Rec Tips Before You Go
A few things we’ve learned over the years that can make or break a Sierra trip:
- Elevation matters: Even short hikes can feel different above 7,000 feet. The Sun is powerful and needs to be prepared for in your eyes, skin and clothing.
- Weather changes fast: Be ready for cold mornings and afternoon storms. Sierra Passes in the shoulder seasons can open and close daily. Be prepared for alternative route selections.
- Shoulder seasons are gold: Late spring and early fall often offer the best experience. However limited route selections and services available may be limited.
- Have a backup plan: Popular spots fill quickly in peak season. Either Plan for crowds or search for crowd free seasons.
