What to Expect on the Trail
Most routes to Round Top Lake begin along the Pacific Crest Trail toward Lake Winnemucca.
From there, the trail continues deeper into the basin.
As you move beyond Winnemucca, the crowds thin out quickly. The terrain becomes more rugged, with granite slopes, alpine vegetation, and expanding views toward the surrounding peaks.
Round Top Peak dominates the skyline here—its jagged, weathered profile giving this area a more dramatic alpine feel.
Round Top Lake itself sits in a quiet basin, often with far fewer hikers than nearby lakes.

Sierra Rec Insight
This is where Carson Pass starts to feel different.
Most people turn around at Lake Winnemucca. Once you move beyond that point, the experience shifts quickly—fewer people, more open space, and a stronger sense of being in the high country.
Round Top Lake isn’t dramatically farther.
But it feels like it.
