Obstacle Racing’s Main Event to Draw more than 15,000 Athletes to North Lake Tahoe for the Spartan World Championship this weekend, Sport’s Best Competitors Battling for more than $125,000 in Cash Prizes

Lake Tahoe, CA (September 27, 2018) – Spartan, the world’s largest obstacle race (OCR) and endurance brand, released the schedule for the 2018 Spartan World Championship Powered by Rakuten, with events taking place September 28 – 30. The best endurance athletes from across the globe will compete for the sport’s ultimate prize at the main event, featuring more than 12-miles of mountainous terrain, more than 30 signature Spartan Obstacles and elevations reaching 9,000 feet. The Spartan World Championship Powered by Rakuten is hosted by North Lake Tahoe Resort Association.
Taking place at Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows – home of the 1960 Winter Olympics, the seventh annual event will see competitors from more than 50 countries vie for more than $125,000 in cash prizes in the biggest race of the year. The championship and Team World Championship races will stream live exclusively on Facebook Watch via the Spartan Race LIVE Page – and will be broadcast on ESPN at a later date. The marquee events for the weekend include:
Friday, September 28
4pm – Pre-Race Press Conference
The weekend’s top elite competitors from around the world will discuss the road to Tahoe and the race ahead.
Saturday, September 29
7:30am – Elite Championship Beast
In the Elite Championship Beast, each racer that stands at the start line has earned the right to compete through qualifying events along the 2018 Spartan Global Championship Series. The race also serves as the first leg of the Spartan $1 Million Trifecta – in which Spartan will award $1 million to the Elite Championship Beast winner in Tahoe if they can replicate 1st place finishes at the Spartan Trifecta World Championship in Sparta, Greece in November and the 24-hour Ultra World Championship in Iceland in December.
Locked and Loaded 24 Hours (LL24H)
A 24-hour Isolation Challenge created by the Whiteboard Project in support of mental health, veterans, and first responders. LL24H will see three endurance athletes stepping inside a shipping container where they will run on a TrueForm Runner in an environment deprived of light, sound and any other typical data used to gauge and monitor performance. The athlete running the furthest during the 24-hours will walk away the winner. Athletes include Retired United States Marine, Major Brian Chontosh (aka “Tosh”); three-time Ironman, John Witzing; and one of Canada’s top personal trainers, Josh Chessman.
Sunday, September 30
Team World Championship
The Team World Championship unfolds along an 8-mile Spartan Super course with more than 25 signature obstacles. The second annual event features athletes on more than 20 country-specific male and female teams of three, competing for more than $10,000 in cash prizes.
