Local Truckee Couple Dedicated to Living a Life Of Adventure and Sharing The Experience With Others.
Sierra Rec Magazine – Truckee CA, February 2019 – As a bright eyed two year old sliding down the slopes at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort with her parents, Nikki Umatum would never dream her life may lead her from Southern California to a 24 hour adventure lifestyle in Truckee California. Fast forward to college, studying International Business at San Francisco State and daring to actually spend time writing down her life goals; including an increasing desire to have adventure be a defining feature of her life. Nikki Umatum found herself driving to the mountains to take the slopes in the Tahoe Basin, even going so far as to write down a few random business names if she was ever able to do adventure for a living. Venturing Out was on the list!
Nikki Umatum the owner and operator of Venturing Out Adventure tours in Truckee CA would then meet Chad Johnson. And get introduced to back country skiing in the Tahoe Basin. As Chad traveled with his split board Nikki would truck along in her snowshoes before strapping on the board and carving out the perfect route in the High Sierra. She would be hooked. The great outdoors needed to be explored more, she needed to spend more time doing adventure in her life and she wanted others to enjoy what she was so passionate about in the outdoors.
And Just like that Venturing Out Adventures was born. In the Spring of 2018, Nikki and Chad took a leap of faith together and began offering outdoor adventures into Desolation Wilderness during the summer, enjoying many trips with visitors to the region into Desolation Wilderness. As winter season approached Nikki new that her love for Snowshoeing would be an easy transition and allow Venturing Out to establish itself as a year round guided adventure option in the Truckee / Tahoe basin.
Snowshoeing from glacier way to sunrise bowl in Truckee has its advantages, as on a clear bluebird day in the Sierra you can see most of the peaks in the Tahoe Basin and panoramic 360 views on the entire Sierra Region around Truckee. However Nikki knew that if visitors from around the world were going to invest in an guided adventure she needed to produce more than just a four hour snow trip with a view. So Nikki took to the kitchen and started designing a custom home cooked meal experience for her guest, taking into consideration dietary needs of her guests. Venturing Out snow adventures include a variety of homemade soups that Nikki cooks up the day before and prepares for her guests on their snowshoe adventure.

Nikki, like so many Sierra explorers has many favorites in the Sierra. Skiing the back country around Tahoe, hiking Desolation Wilderness, Dicks lake is her favorite location to date, but she can’t wait to explore more the Desolation lakes this summer. Her favorite Sierra location is Matterhorn Peak and Travertine Hot springs.
