California State Parks Week Comes to the Sierra Nevada, June 11–15
California State Parks Week returns this June 11–15, and here in the Sierra Nevada, we’ve got every reason to celebrate. With some of the most iconic state parks in the system—Calaveras Big Trees, Donner Memorial, Emerald Bay, and Sugar Pine Point, just to name a few—the Sierra offers a breathtaking backdrop for this year’s statewide theme: “This is Where You Live.”
This fourth annual event isn’t just a celebration of place—it’s an open invitation for all Californians to deepen their connection to the public lands right outside their door. With more than 170 events planned across the state, many are set in the rugged, forested, and water-filled playgrounds of the Sierra. Whether you’re a local or planning a summer visit, California State Parks Week is a perfect reason to explore, engage, and enjoy the natural and cultural treasures we call home.

Sierra Highlights: Where the Celebration Meets the Mountains
🌲 June 13 – Calaveras Big Trees State Park: Fire and Forest Walk
Join park staff for an interpretive walk along the North Grove Trail to explore the complex role fire plays in the giant sequoia ecosystem. This is a rare chance to witness climate education come alive under the towering sequoias that have stood for thousands of years.
💻 June 12 – Virtual Dive with Tahoe State Recreation Area
Can’t make it to the lake? No problem. Tune into a special virtual event that takes you beneath the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe. Learn about the lake’s geology and underwater secrets while gaining a new appreciation for this Sierra jewel.
🌿 Year-Round Reflections at Emerald Bay and Sugar Pine Point
While no formal events are listed (yet!) at these West Shore gems, California State Parks Week is a perfect excuse to spend time wandering the historic grounds of Vikingsholm Castle at Emerald Bay or paddling the peaceful waters off Sugar Pine Point’s shoreline. This is your week to explore deeper and linger longer.
Themes That Matter in the Sierra
Each day of California State Parks Week comes with a distinct theme—designed to encourage stewardship, discovery, and connection. And in the Sierra Nevada, these themes resonate deeply:
- Care for Our Shared Lands: Join a volunteer crew, pick up litter on your hike, or simply follow Leave No Trace principles to help protect the wild places we love.
- Celebrate Community and Culture: Visit Donner Memorial State Park and reflect on the perseverance of pioneers—or explore the contributions of Indigenous communities at regional park sites.
- Explore New Experiences: Ever tried stargazing from the shores of Silver Lake? Or a sunrise hike through the granite-strewn trails of Plumas-Eureka State Park? This week is your sign to do just that.
- Nourish Your Health and Well-Being: A walk in the woods at Grover Hot Springs or a picnic at South Yuba River is more than scenic—it’s healing.
- Support Climate Resilience: From forest health to water conservation, Sierra parks are at the frontlines of climate impact. Events like the one at Calaveras Big Trees are more than informative—they’re empowering.

Why It Matters: A Celebration of Access and Legacy
California is celebrating 175 years of statehood in 2025, and the parks that line our Sierra ridges and valleys are central to that story. They’ve preserved natural history, hosted countless family adventures, and served as outdoor classrooms for generations.
As Armando Quintero, Director of California State Parks, put it: “This is where you live… Whether you’re hiking, volunteering or simply soaking in the views, this week is a beautiful reminder to embrace the unmatched nature of California.”

Final Thoughts
At Sierra Rec, we believe the Sierra Nevada isn’t just a destination—it’s a community of explorers, stewards, and storytellers. California State Parks Week is a beautiful reminder that adventure doesn’t always require a distant journey. Sometimes, the best places to explore are the ones in your own backyard.
So this June, lace up your boots, pack a picnic, and celebrate the Sierra. After all, this is where you live.
