Backpacking the Sierra Nevada isn’t something you finish.

The range stretches for more than 400 miles through California, encompassing dozens of wilderness areas, thousands of miles of trail, and countless alpine lakes hidden beyond the next pass. Even after years of exploring these mountains, I still find places I’ve never seen and trails I’ve yet to walk.

This guide isn’t meant to be a complete catalog of every backpacking trip in the Sierra.

Instead, it’s a growing collection of journeys that Sierra Rec has experienced firsthand — routes we’ve walked, campsites we’ve watched the sunset from, and wilderness areas we’ve returned to again and again because they continue to inspire us.

Some of these adventures are classic Sierra experiences. Others lead into quieter corners of the range that deserve far more attention than they receive. Over time, this guide will continue to grow as we discover more of California’s extraordinary backcountry.

The Sierra Nevada rewards curiosity. Choose a trail that speaks to you, begin exploring, and remember that the best backpacking journeys often lead to places you weren’t expecting to find.

Start Here: New to Sierra Backpacking?

Backpacking in the Sierra Nevada can feel overwhelming at first. The range stretches for hundreds of miles across California, encompassing everything from short overnight trips to week-long wilderness journeys deep into remote alpine country. Add permits, bear canister requirements, trail conditions, and seasonal considerations, and it’s easy to wonder where to begin.

The good news is that there isn’t one “right” way to experience the Sierra. Some backpackers spend years returning to the same wilderness area, learning every lake and ridgeline by heart. Others chase new adventures each season, gradually piecing together a deeper understanding of the range.

Whether you’re planning your very first overnight trip or searching for your next unforgettable adventure, Sierra Rec aims to help you discover routes that inspire confidence, curiosity, and a lasting connection to these mountains.

Start with a destination that excites you, choose a trip that matches your experience level, and remember that every experienced backpacker was once standing exactly where you are now — wondering where to begin.

Backpack by Region

One of the reasons backpacking in the Sierra Nevada remains endlessly rewarding is that no two regions feel exactly alike. Granite basins, volcanic landscapes, high alpine passes, ancient forests, and remote wilderness lakes all offer distinctly different experiences depending on where you choose to explore.

Lake Tahoe & Northern Sierra

Home to Desolation Wilderness , Carson Pass, and sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail, this region offers some of the Sierra’s most accessible backpacking opportunities. Expect granite landscapes, sparkling alpine lakes, and routes ranging from beginner-friendly overnights to challenging multi-day traverses.

Yosemite & Central Sierra

Yosemite’s wilderness extends far beyond the famous valley floor. From Tuolumne Meadows and Vogelsang to Emigrant and Hoover Wilderness, this region delivers iconic High Sierra scenery filled with alpine lakes, dramatic passes, and unforgettable backcountry camps.

Eastern Sierra

The Eastern Sierra provides some of California’s most spectacular backpacking terrain. Higher elevations, rugged granite peaks, and legendary destinations like Bishop Pass, the John Muir Wilderness, and Ansel Adams Wilderness reward hikers willing to tackle steeper climbs and longer approaches.

Southern Sierra

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks protect some of the wildest landscapes in the Sierra Nevada. Giant sequoias, remote canyons, and classic routes like Mineral King and the High Sierra Trail showcase the immense scale and beauty of California’s southern mountains.

Each region offers a different perspective on the Sierra Nevada. The best place to begin is often the place that sparks your imagination and makes you eager to shoulder a pack and start walking.
