On Saturday in Reno, Cyclocross comes to town in the CrossReno.  This USA Cycling sanctioned cyclocross event is expected to attract hundreds of nationally and internationally ranked professional cyclists and elite amateur cyclists. But it’s not just a race offering national ranking, it’s also a festival featuring live music, food trucks, craft beer garden, retail expo, and family-friendly activities.

What is Cyclocross you ask?
It’s a spectator friendly discipline where Road Cyclists and Mountain Bikers compete aggressively together off-road on hybrid bikes in diverse conditions. That’s right, unlike other cycling events, spectators can pretty much see and access all parts of the race course contained in one place. Cyclocross courses are closed circuits with fun, challenging, and punishing man-made natural obstacles and barriers.
For the most part, the course is off-road but there are sometimes portions of pavement included in the course. Racers encounter grass, dirt, mud, gravel, sand, and a whole slew of other assortments and combinations. The races are based on a set time (measured by numbers of laps), not distance. Depending on the category, a race can be as quick as 30 minutes (for beginners), or as long as 60 minutes (for pros).
