December 9, 2023 – Well if the motivation and theme is just go and do, our crew is batting a 100 since Thanksgiving, as we head out seeking snow each weekend for our winter recreation delights. However 2023 is not starting like 2022, and the opportunities to find snow worthy of a great afternoon snowshoe, are slim.
Last weekend we did find a pretty day hike into Woods Lake following the creek and roaming thorough the forest finding drifts of snow that would cover our boots along the way. I think on social media i even questioned if we needed snowshoes? Regardless of our choice, we enjoyed the fresh powdery cover & focused on the wintery coolness in the air and blasting our cheeks.
Today, we were focused on the frosty white trees that we could see from the Carson Valley as we looked up towards Genoa Peak and Kingsbury grade certain we would find a terrain worthy of a good snowshoe trek. Once again however we discovered a beautiful day in the mountains but I could not honestly tell you that it is Snowshoe worthy.
We did strap the shoes on again and trapse around the trail a bit on North Kingsbury trailhead to Castle Peak in South Lake Tahoe. And it was a spectacular blue bird ski, wrapped from our point of view with sparkling white snow bound trees. Kingsbury North Trailhead on the Tahoe Rim Trail is a great place to go for a quick easy snowshoe trek when you only have a few hours. We tend to find ourselves here or at Spooner summit on those days in the winter, as parking is easy and the scenic value around the Tahoe Rim Trail is always pleasing.
I hear that by Christmas it is very possible that California and the Sierra might be in for a vary power El Nino Forecast of moisture, until then we will continue to survey the region for a good day out in the snowshoes enjoying the beautiful Sierra winter season.
