Recent Road Closures into Kernville from Bakersfield region change access point to popular summer destination
Kernville California, May 31, 2023- The Spring run off rages on in the Sierra, and in small mountain communities who thrive during the hte summer season, the delays and road closures take their toll. Kernville California is the base camp to the Kern river recreation area and a popular summer destination for southern Sierra travelers from Los Angeles southern California. Recent closures of the Kern Canyon Highway has raised some concerns on access. but our friends at Kern River Brewery gave us this update today on access route and all the businesses that are ready to support your recreational travel plans.
Sierra Rec Magazine team is heading down here Sunday for our first visit to the region and look forward to visiting local establishments as well as ride the river with Kern River Outfitters.
There have been some road closures due to our EPIC water year. Route 178 through Kern Canyon to Lak Isabella is closed until further notice because of a crack and water erosion of the roadway and HWY 155 is closed because of winter flood damage as well. . Drivers will need to travel East to the 14 or hwy 395 and connect with Route 178 from the east to get to Lake Isabella and Kernville. For Southern California, it’s only another 25 minutes of beautiful drive time. If coming from (or through from the north or west of) Bakersfield it’s about a 45 minute longer drive than usual but also very scenic. Rather than just a day trip, consider an overnighter – there’s a ton to do and see up here!
