Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev. — The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is offering a new scholarship program designed to empower Lake Tahoe community members to have a voice in shaping the region’s future. As part of the broader Tahoe Living initiative, the scholarship aims to enhance community engagement in the planning process, particularly around affordable and workforce housing policies.

The initiative, titled “Cultivating Community, Conserving the Basin,” is a multi-year project focused on modernizing land use policies and maintaining a balanced approach to environmental protection and housing needs. With housing affordability being a critical issue in the Tahoe Basin, this program offers a platform for underrepresented voices to influence critical decisions that impact both community well-being and natural preservation.
TRPA’s Executive Director Julie Regan emphasized the importance of inclusive participation, stating, “We want to ensure that many voices help shape solutions to affordable housing that improve safety and continue to protect Lake Tahoe. These scholarships and new training opportunities can help community members most affected by housing challenges gain the knowledge and skills needed to engage in decision-making.”
The scholarship program offers up to $25,000 in funding, including individual awards up to $1,600 and a special $3,000 scholarship for attending a conference. The financial support is designed to help community members access training courses covering subjects such as planning, environmental regulations, growth management, public safety, and zoning. The aim is not only to educate but also to encourage hands-on learning and active participation in the decision-making process.

In addition to financial aid, TRPA’s Community Academy webinar series complements the scholarships by providing free public education on relevant topics. Participants are encouraged to share feedback on how to improve these training opportunities, ensuring the program evolves to meet community needs.
For locals interested in applying, eligibility extends to full-time and seasonal residents as well as those working in the Tahoe Basin. The program seeks a diverse group of participants, reflecting a broad spectrum of experiences and perspectives.
