Annual Family Event in Truckee draws a great crowd of participants.
Truckee Ca, November 12 2015 – Last Saturday the ASC Training Center, based on Donner Summit, hosted the 39th annual Donner
Lake Turkey Trot. Saturday dawned a beautiful, sunny fall morning. The fog lifted off the lake just in time for the walk and run to begin.
Over 125 people turned out to walk or run the 7.2 miles around Donner Lake. Another 50 people competed in the Mashed Potato Mile, a one-mile fun run that also starts and finishes at West End Beach.
Sean Clark from Philadelphia, PA won the Turkey Trot in an impressive 40 minutes and 5 seconds. Bethany Gunther, also from Philadelphia, edged out Christina Mishica, a local XC ski coach from Sugar Bowl Academy, in a sprint to the finish. Bethany ran a great race taking only 48 minutes and 23 seconds to seal the win. Zach Yeager from Reno came in second for the men, falling short of the win by less than a minute. In third for the men was Auburn Ski Club’s own Elite Nordic Skier Wyatt Fereday and in third place for the women was Ashley French of Mill Valley, CA. The youngest finisher was 10-year-old Leo Carlstrom who finished in 1 hour and 7 minutes. The oldest finisher was 74-year-old Marisa Ellero from Reno who ran it in 1 hour and 25 minutes.
Jim Meskimen, 72, of Truckee, CA participated once again this year and is the only participant to have run in every single Turkey Trot! He finished in 1 hour and 53 minutes. Twelve-year-old Hana Mazur of the Auburn Ski Club XC Devo Team and a Truckee local won the Mashed potato mile in 6 minutes and 42 seconds. Amelia Swanson who is also 12 and from Truckee came in second. In third place and first for the men’s division was 12-year-old Diego Rodriguez also from Truckee. The youngest mile finisher was three-year-old Odin Healy of Truckee.
A fun raffle followed the run; Auburn Ski Club gave away pumpkin pies, cookies, turkeys, and other Thanksgiving-themed prizes baked by amazing ASC volunteers. In addition, the title sponsor, the Tahoe Sports Hub, gave away many prizes from their store and also gave away
gift cards to the top three male and female winners. Other local businesses like Safeway, the Treat Box and the Red Truck also donated gift cards to the raffle.
Many participants went home feeling lucky! A special thank you to the Truckee Donner Recreation and Parks District, the Town of Truckee, and all the participants and volunteers for helping to make it a great day.
