Plan your Summer Fishing Derbies in In The Sierra for 2016

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, which as we know is the official start to summer. Vacations, outdoor adventures, family campouts etc.. In the Sierra another season is just hitting its stride after a fast and furious opening last month, Fishing Derbies!   Fishing Derbies and tournaments have long been a favorite on ethe variety of mountain lake communities, part marketing ploy to bring more people to their little part of the Sierra and part just plain great fishing with a little more prize to your catch.
Fishing the variety of fish and location in the Sierra is contagious. Here is a list of events we could find for this years Fishing Derbies and Tournaments.  If you know of others within the sierra let us know and we will get them added to the list.

Summer Fishing Derbies 2016

May 1 – June 16 – “Round-up at the Lake” Spring Fishing Derby – Convict Lake. Cash prizes up for grabs; advance registration required.  Contact (800) 992-2260www.ConvictLake.com

May 21-  Junior Fishing Derby at Graeagle Millpond -Get ready kids, the Junior Fishing Derby will cast off on May 21st at the Graeagle Millpond. For more information about this event contact Graeagle Land and water at 530-836-2523

May 27 – June 27 – Crowley Lake Perch Derby – Crowley Lake. Contact (760) 935-4301 www.CrowleyLakeFishCamp.com

June 3 – The 19th Annual Jake’s Charity Fishing Derby, the only derby on Lake Tahoe, will take place on Sunday, June 3rd as anglers from around the region try to reel in over $1500 in prize money.

June 4-  Lake Tahoe Optimist Club is hosting it’s annual Kid’s Fishing Derby on June 4th, 2016 at Sawmill Pond beginning at 8:00 am to noon. All children 14 years and younger are welcome to attend.

June 3-4th – The 27th Annual Kids Fishing Derby will be held June 3rd and 4th, 2016 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville; hosting all children ages 3-12.

June 3 – 5 – “Hangman’s Bonus Derby” Convict Lake – Convict Lake. Cash prizes up for grabs; advanced registration required. Contact (800) 992-2260.

June 10 – 11 – Trout Invitational Tournament – Crowley Lake. Contact (760) 935-4301 www.CrowleyLakeFishCamp.com

June 12 – Rush Creek Clean-up and BBQ – Silver Lake Resort. Visit www.SilverLakeResort.net for more details.

June 18 –  28th Annual Kids Fishing Derby by Truckee Rotary – Oh yes the annual Kids Fishing Derby. This event is free  to all children 12 and under. It will be held at the Cold Stream Pond behind Donner State Memorial Park. This event is jointly sponsored by the Nevada County Fish and Game and the Truckee Noon Rotary Club.

June 20-21 – Fred Hall Father’s Day Fishing Tournament –Mammoth Lakes Basin. Be part of the Fred Hall tradition by participating in the Father’s Day Derby. Fish in the Mammoth Lakes Basin on June 20-21, 2015, then weigh your catch at Rick’s Sports Center at 3241 Main Street in Mammoth Lakes for a chance at winning an awesome prize package!  For more info: 760-934-3416.

June 25 – Bridgeport Trout Tournament.  An open derby with several categories, funds generated from this event help provide more trout for Bridgeport Reservoir and the East Walker River.Contact (760) 932-7525 /www.BridgeportFishEnhancement.com; or Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce at (760) 932-7500 /www.BridgeportCalifornia.com.

June 25 – Department of Fish & Wildlife’s Trout Fest – Hot Creek Hatchery. Free for kids, instruction, activities, casting lessons, insect display and more. Event is from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. For more information, contact (559) 765-4824.

June 28 – July 5 – Mono Village 4th of July Fishing Derby – Upper Twin Lakes, Bridgeport. Cash and merchandise prizes, given in several categories. Registration fee required. Contact (760) 932-7071 www.MonoVillage.com.

July 1-31 – How Big is Big Fishing Derby – West Walker River. Sponsored by the communities of Walker, Coleville and Topaz, and the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce, the 9th Annual How Big is Big Fishing Derby runs for the entire month of July. No entry fee — just bring your fish into the Walker General Store, and your catch will be weighed and recorded.  Lots of prizes. Contact (530) 208-6078 / www.NorthernMonoChamber.com.

July 2 – Free Fishing Day.  Come and fish for FREE in Mono County! All regulations still apply and Report Cards are required — but Fishing Licences are waived on this day (and again on September 3, 2016). For more information on Mono County fishing regulations, contact the California Department of Fish & Game at (760) 934-2664 or visit the website. 

July 16th – Stampede Res. Team Kokanee Derby -http://www.kokaneepower.org/derbies.php

July 25 – Kids Fishing Festival- Snowcreek Resort Mammoth Lakes – Kids under 12 can catch an Alpers trout at Snowcreek ponds. Event T-shirts, prizes. Contact (760) 937-2942 or www.KidsFishFest.com.

July 29-30 – NEW! Bridgeport Fish Fest – Stay tuned for more information on this fishing derby, poker run, live music, family-fun event hosted by the Twin Lakes Resort (website). More updates on Facebook: Twin Lakes Resort.

August 1-9 – Mono Village Summer Fishing Derby – Upper Twin Lakes, Bridgeport. Cash and merchandise prizes, given in several categories. Registration fee required. Contact (760) 932-7071 /www.MonoVillage.com.

August 6 – Lake Almanor Team Trout & Salmon Derby

August 7 – 9 – “Size Doesn’t Matter” Fishing Derby – West Walker River,  3-day event with tagged fish bounties worth prizes and cash. Entry stamps must be purchased in advanced and are available at local business in Walker. Contact (530) 208-6078 or www.northernmonochamber.com

August 22- Crowley Lake Stillwater Classic – Crowley Lake. Contact 760-935-4301 / www.CrowleyLakeFishCamp.com/.

August 29- September 8 – Mono Village Labor Day Fishing Derby – Upper Twin Lakes, Bridgeport. Cash and merchandise prizes, given in several categories. Registration fee required.  Contact (760) 932-7071 /www.MonoVillage.com.

September 1 – November 15 – “Ambush at the Lake” Fall Fishing Derby – Convict Lake. Catch a tagged fish at the Convict Lake Fall Fishing Derby Series and win thousands of dollars in cash and prizes!  Contact (800) 992-2260.
