This past weekend Sierra Nevada travelers faced many delays on the highways and local resorts as the weather again played a role in the weekend adventures. As we come out of the weekend, however, the Sierra Nevada is bracing for what looks to be a seriously dangerous blizzard estimated to drop another 5-10 feet of Snow over the next three days.
The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard warning for the entire Sierra Nevada.
EXTREMELY dangerous to IMPOSSIBLE mountain travel expected today early Wed due to a major winter storm. BLIZZARD conditions are expected in the Sierra with the worst late morning-afternoon today & again Tues. MOUNTAIN TRAVEL IS HIGHLY DISCOURAGED!
Avoid Travel today – early Wednesday! Mountain travel will be extremely difficult to impossible due to heavy Snow, strong winds and near-zero visibility. If you risk Traveling over mountain passes, be prepared for extended delays & possible road closures. Bring an emergency supply kit!
Yosemite National Park Closed
On Saturday, Yosemite National Park decided to close the park to visitors until Wednesday, March 1st, because of already dangerous driving conditions and avalanche danger.
Sequoia National Park has also notified potential visitors that nearly every road in the park is closed at this time because of snow conditions and danger.
In Mammoth, Blizzard Conditions will make Travel nearly impossible.
In Mammoth, conditions and snow depths are a severe concern as emergency vehicles, road crews and services and general, are almost paralyzed by the continual pounding they have received this winter. The area’s guests have routinely been warned that travel expectations must be altered. Highway 395 has been closed multiple times in the past week because of blizzard and avalanche conditions, making bishop to Bridgeport Travel nearly impossible.
In Tahoe, the World Cup Was successful, but Snow played a part in the results.
This weekend, Snow and Travel were a massive issue for all the resorts and communities in Lake Tahoe. But at Palisades, they successfully help the World Cup of skiing with Snow and wind playing their part Sunday.
As the Lake prepares for the impending blizzard conditions, mountain resorts and all their teams work diligently to keep runs open for season ticket holders, all while preparing for high wind and avalanche danger closures across the mountains.
Highways 88, 50 and 80 continue to have frequent closures as CalTrans battles the conditions and the onslaught of drivers that seem to ignore the weather warnings for most of the weekend.
Yuba River Travel is not for Tourists.
And North of Truckee, the Yuba Canyon Travel this weekend highlighted the danger of listening to Google Maps or other traffic sources that suggest alternative routes. Drivers who followed Google North over the Yuba pass during closures of 80 were met with feet of powder on the highways at times with high winds. It is often said that the Yuba pass is not for tourists in the winter.
