Caltrans is busy clearing HWY 120 of Boulders getting ready for possible early opening for Yosemite’s East side
Tioga Pass 2022 – “Fire in the Hole” rang out in the canyon walls just before the first crack of an explosion in Tioga Pass this past week. As the winter makes one last stand across the Sierra this week. Caltrans reminds us on Facebook that the clearing of our scenic byways is well under way across the Sierra.
With the road plowed through already the final stages for most of our scenic byways is the clearing of boulders that have fallen on the surfaces over the winter. This current winter storm front will delay opening a few more day as crews had to close previously opened Monitor Pass ahead of the storm and will let the storm pass before continuing operations on Tioga and the remainder of HWY 120.
Although there are some light snowstorms in the region this week, all signs point to hiking season beginning very early this year. Last year, Tioga Road opened on May 27, and the earliest it has opened in the past decade was May 2, 2014.
