  • Learn more about sustainable practices, dispose of used lithium-ion batteries and enjoy local entertainment at the area’s largest Earth Day celebration on April 23
  • New environmental programs and partnerships continue to push Palisades Tahoe’s commitment to sustainability

Olympic Valley, Calif. [April 18, 2022]— Tahoe’s largest Earth Day celebration returns to Palisades Tahoe on Saturday, April 23 with displays and activities from local sustainability groups, a student exhibition and live entertainment. Tahoe Truckee Earth Day aims to educate the community by connecting people directly with the local organizations and businesses that are providing sustainable services and products to our area, and who foster innovation and initiate change in the quest for a greener planet. This free event takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in The Village at Palisades Tahoe.

Many local organizations will have booths set up, where guests of all ages can learn about sustainability, recycling, composting and alternative energy through hands-on activities the whole family can enjoy. The Events Plaza will come alive with music and entertainment all afternoon; including the crowd-favorite “Trashion” fashion show. The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will name the grand prize winner of its Save Our Snow social media campaign. This festival is a zero waste event, so don’t forget to bring your reusable utensils, containers and water bottles. Volunteers will be sorting food and biodegradable waste during the event.

Climate Stripes Exhibit

Students from the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, along with help from Mountain Forge, Forest Charter, Palisades Tahoe and the Citizens Climate Lobby, have created their second-ever Climate Stripes Exhibit, which will be displayed from April 21-24 in the Village at Palisades Tahoe Tram Plaza.

This Climate Stripes Exhibit is part of the #ShowYourStripes initiative, a visual representation of the change in temperature over time measured in each country. The graphic typically starts out an icy blue on the left and morphs into a fiery red on the right side. Each colored stripe represents the country’s average temperature for a year. For most countries, the “warming stripe” graphic starts in the year 1901 and ends in 2021.

Envirolution Trashion Show

Stop by the Events Plaza Stage at 2:15 p.m. to witness a fashion show that features clothing made out of litter collected from the environment. This “Trashion Show” is put on by the Envirolution Club of Truckee High School. Envirolution students raise awareness and encourage audience members to act on environmental issues in their own community.

Save Our Snow

This winter, UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC), Palisades Tahoe and Protect Our Winters partnered together to increase public action and combat the negative effects of climate change with the Save Our Snow campaign. Participants started a conversation on social media with an augmented reality Instagram filter or with these blue and gold slides which illustrated the effects climate change will have on the ski industry if action isn’t taken now. Participants can take a pledge to cut carbon emissions by 1 ton per year, using the Save Our Snow website to pick simple, everyday activities to reach that goal. Weekly prizes were given away, and the grand prize winner will be chosen at this event. The grand prize is a 2022/2023 Palisades Tahoe season pass. Learn more at https://tahoe.ucdavis.edu/saveoursnow.

Used Battery Disposal

The Tahoe-Truckee Earth Day Foundation, Redwood Materials, the Rotary Club of Incline Village and multiple Tahoe Interact Clubs are offering a drive-through battery drop off booth for festival attendees and the local community to drop off their lithium-ion batteries and consumer devices for proper disposal. Batteries cannot be sent to landfills because they are manufactured with hazardous materials that can leak into the earth and contaminate groundwater. The booth will be located in the parking lot in between Auld Dubliner and Fireside Pizza, and will be accepting drop offs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Schedule

  • 11 a.m. | Main event in the Village at Palisades Tahoe Begins. Educational booths will be on display all day
  • 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. | Pipe Down will be playing music at the Events Plaza Stage
  • 2 – 2:15 p.m. | Asha World Dancers will perform at the Events Plaza Stage
  • 2:15 – 3 p.m. | Envirolution Trashion Show at the Events Plaza Stage
  • 3:30 – 5 p.m.| Coburn Station will be playing music at the Events Plaza Stage

We would like to thank our sponsors: Keep Truckee Green, Drink Tahoe Tap, Truckee Sanitary District, Incline VIllage, Tahoe-Incline & Truckee Noon Rotary Clubs and Redwood Materials for making this event possible.

New Environmental Initiatives at Palisades Tahoe

Palisades Tahoe has made sustainability and environmental initiatives a priority for many years, and this year the resort expanded its efforts with two new programs. Last fall, the resort launched a pilot program utilizing renewable diesel fuel for the first time. This fuel is manufactured from 100% renewable raw materials , and produces approximately 25% GHG emissions compared to conventional diesel fuel. This season, it is being used in the lower mountain grooming machines, six trucks, to heat internal-use buildings and to run the backup generators used in power outages. There are plans to expand to the entire on-snow diesel fleet next season.

Also new this season, the Palisades Tahoe Food and Beverage Team worked to divert all food waste from the landfill by manually sorting waste at all food and beverage locations. Cafeteria trash cans were replaced with speed racks to create a convenient place for guests to put their waste. Team members then collected waste from the racks and manually sorted all contents into landfill, recycling and compost. After sorting, diverted food waste is taken to an off-site composting facility.

Palisades Tahoe continues to offer programs to protect our environment such as Drink Mountain Tap, premium Protect Our Winter (POW) Carpool Parking, complimentary access to on-site electric car charging stations, a free shuttle between the Village at Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Lodge and other traffic reduction initiatives.
