Plumas County Ca – February 9, 2023 – The Annual “Maybe Ice” Trout fishing derby will be held Saturday February 18th at Lake Davis near Portola California. The annual derby helps raise funds and support the Eastern Plumas Rural Fire district. Fisherman are invited to register prior to the event at J&J grizzly Store in 7552 Lake Davis Road in Portola Ca.
Registration and check-in is at J&J Grizzly Store and Camping Resort. The official start time is 7 a.m. No fishing is allowed by participants on the day of the derby before start time. This is a trout derby. Only trout will be accepted for weigh-in. Weigh in begins at 1 p.m. and ends at 3 p.m. Absolutely no transferring of fish between participants. Points are determined by the weight and length of the fish. One fish per participant will be used to determine standing.

Lake Davis Recreational Area is a great place for a weekend get-away. Winter recreation includes Ice fishing, snowshoe and cross country skiing, fat Tire trail riding, snowmobile and more. The Portola region is part of the Lost Sierra Connected Communities trail system as well.
Lake Davis (elev: 5775 ft.) is open all year, providing ice fishing through the winter. During the Summer and fall season fisherman can find boat ramps at Mallard Cove, Lightning Tree, Honker Cove and Jenkins Cove. It has numerous coves that can be accessed by float tube or boat and the shoreline provides many wading opportunities. Davis Lake is known for producing big trout due to the nutrient-rich waters, visitors can often find Eagles fishing along side then once the ice melts.
Directions:
Lake Davis can be reached by taking West Street north from Portola on Highway 70 (West Street becomes Lake Davis Road), or by taking Grizzly Road which is three miles northeast of Portola. Lake Davis is 6 miles north of Portola. Grizzly Road connects with Lake Davis Road at Lake Davis. Grizzly Road is paved running along the eastern shoreline of Lake Davis. A gravel road follows the western shoreline from Lake Davis Road to the northern end.
