Dogs Prohibited at the Waterfall and Kings Loop Trail at Kings Creek
Carson City Nevada, June 8, 2022 – Effective as of June 1st, 2022, dogs are no longer permitted on the Waterfall Trail or the North Kings Loop Trail, both of which are in the Kings Canyon area and near Kings Creek. This restriction has been implemented to better protect Kings Creek, which is a source of Carson City’s drinking water.
Signs have been posted at the Kings Canyon Trailhead to inform visitors of the new restrictions. Park Rangers will be frequenting the area to educate users about the new restrictions. After an education period, citations will be issued for violations. Dogs are currently permitted on most other trails in Carson City. Please visit carson.org/trails for information specific to other trails. It is uncertain from press release if the Upper Waterfall loop is included in this ban.
When hiking, visitors are also asked to please stay on trails and not create their own short-cuts. The cutting of trails loosens soil, damages ground-protecting vegetation, and creates ruts that may contribute to additional runoff entering our creeks and water systems.
We learned of this ban from a social post by Kolo 8 in Reno and an article by Karlie Drew. The article states that this ban is in place to protect the Carson City drinking water. the Public works of Carson city had an independent study done and made recommendations to reduce the amount of pet and human waster, found in the canyon. Experts shared dog waste had more nutrients which creates more algae growth in the water.
