WOLF CREEK TRAILHEAD ~ CARSON ICEBERG WILDERNESS ~ ALPINE COUNTY CA.

Wolf Creek

Wolf Creek Trail is a well know horseback trail but I seldom see other hikers on the trail. This is one of our favorite quick trip wilderness escapes in the central Sierra.

Wolf Creek is one of those out and back day trips that can be as long or short and easy or as difficult as you like. The Trailhead enters Carson Iceberg Wilderness immediately and your entire trip you will follow Wolfcreek up the Valley. The scenic hike has cliffs, vistas, meadows, forests and aspen groves. The Hike is relatively flat for the first 60-90 minutes of the hike.  And besides on quick trip over a granite / Lava rock boulder section that the trail gets a little tricky to follow the trail is very well defined. There are several creek stop locations that give you access to the river along the way. a couple canyon areas where the water rushes through and you can step off the trail to watch.

The Wolf Creek Trail will take you to Bull Lake, the PCT and various other Carson Iceberg trails and destinations.  Probably the more popular 10-mile hike is to start up top on Ebbett’s Pass taking the PCT into the Wolf Creek Canyon Trail that comes back down to the Horse Camp at Wolf Creek.

TO GET TO WOLF CREEK:

Take Hwy 4 out of Markleville towards Ebbett’s Pass / Bear Valley.  Turn Left onto Wolf Creek Road to the west side of Centerville Flat Campground. Follow this road until the end, the pavement will turn into a dirt road, fairly well maintained as there is a working ranch over the hill just before the horse camp. The Trail starts just as you are entering the horse camp area.

I have seen guys bring their fishing poles in here but don’t know if they have had any luck. The water moves fairly swift and shallow most of the season.

Walking the Forest you will see several areas that had lightning fires in the past and there is abundant wildlife in the area if you stay still long enough.
