Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship Opens New Acorn Grotto Trail
If you’ve ever bombed down Mount Hough, you know it’s not just a ride—it’s a full-blown rollercoaster of flow, tech, and big Sierra views. And now, thanks to the absolute legends at Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, we’ve got a brand-new reason to load the bikes and hit Quincy: Acorn Grotto is officially open.

Yeah, you read that right. The SBTS Pro Trail Crew just punched through 3.6 miles of fresh singletrack heaven that connects the mid-mountain doubletrack (25N14 Quarry Road) into what will eventually become a 17-mile top-to-bottom descent from the summit of Indian Falls Ridge to that sweet post-ride swim hole. Let that sink in: 7,200 feet down, endless grin, and shuttle service via Yuba Expeditions? That’s the stuff trail dreams are made of.
The new Acorn Grotto trail drops a solid 1,100 feet, tying in with the existing Mt. Hough Trail near the Tollgate Creek Crossing. Translation? We’re talking buttery transitions, fast flow, and more variety for linking up loops or chasing that shuttle-powered gravity fix. And with the Trail #8 connector up next, it’s only getting better.
This isn’t just some one-off trail build either—Acorn Grotto checks a major box in the Mt. Hough Phase 2 project: 37 miles of new singletrack on deck, and nearly 80 miles total once it’s wrapped. It’s been a decade-long labor of love funded by CA-OHV grants, trail-loving donors, and hundreds of hours from volunteers who believed in the ride.
So if you’ve been looking for a reason to point the rig toward Plumas County, this is it. Check shuttle updates at yubaexpeditions.com, rally your crew, and get ready to send it.
See you on the dirt — and yeah, I’ll race you to the swim hole.
