A weekend in Groveland California

The dust clinging to my boots told the story – a long day of adventure at Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Sunrise had found me leaving The Carson Valley in a cloud of exhaust, the radio blasting classic rock as I sped towards Yosemite’s north gate. Early season access for us on the East side forces a more extended day of traveling as we cross the sierra and connect up with the Gold Country of the Sierra on our way into Yosemite’s footprint. Anticipation thrummed in my veins – waterfalls, hikes, and a healthy dose of fresh mountain air were on the agenda.

Exploring Hetch Hetchy

Hetch Hetchy never fails to amaze. The clear blue waters framed by towering Yosemite granite walls are a breathtaking sight. As one of the most stunning yet least visited sections of the park, it’s a true gem to explore in the spring. I spent the day chasing waterfalls, their thunderous roar a constant companion. Wapama Falls, the star attraction, is a large cascading multi-layered fall that can only be partially seen from the O’Shaughnessy Dam and parking area. It’s a hike that every Yosemite visitor should experience, With its easy-to-moderate trail passing by several seasonal falls that drape the granite walls like a scene from a fairy tale. It’s a photographer’s paradise. After a well deserved lunch at the footbridge that crosses over the lower fall we dinked around the trail and various rocks just past the dam, taking plenty of unused photographs and leisurely just enjoying the moments. The fading daylight and growing cloud base signaled that my adventures were best continued the next day, so we headed back into Groveland for the evening.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues, I arrived in Groveland. The Groveland Hotel , with its cozy charm, was a welcome sight. After a quick shower, I headed to the hotel’s outdoor patio, a tranquil oasis where I could unwind and take in the stunning vistas of the Yosemite region.  Main Street buzzed with friendly energy, a stark contrast to the serene beauty of Hetch Hetchy. The Iron Door Saloon, with its creaky floorboards and Wild West ambiance, beckoned for a post-adventure drink.
Tomorrow, a new adventure awaited.

A Relaxing Day on the Greens

Golf at Pine Mountain Lake felt like a luxury after yesterday’s adventures. The pristine course, with its stunning west Sierra mountain scenery, seemed to stretch forever. Each swing offered a moment of zen, a chance to soak in the beauty surrounding me. I only wish my Golf game was up to par for this charming course in the Sierra foothills.
Thinking maybe later, I’d explore the Ferretti Road trails on a rented mountain bike, a chance to test my skills on some challenging single tracks, but after a full day of travel the day before caught up, and it was time for a nap. In my traditional way I headed I drove the car back up the mountain to hand the hammock near Carlon falls and chill for my afternoon nap. There is something uniquely special about the rush of Spring waterfalls that allows me to rest.

Carlon Falls – Spring 30 minutes East of Groveland

Dinner at a local joint, Around the Horn Brewing Company, promised Great, locally sourced food and friendly small-town chatter. Groveland wasn’t just a pit stop; it was a vibe. The locals, casual, relaxed and friendly, seemed to carry the spirit of adventure in their eyes. Sharing stories with them over a  Cuban and a pretzel while downing a pint or two of the local brew flavors was like becoming part of the fabric of this charming town.
Tomorrow, Yosemite Valley awaits.

YART Reservations Yosemite

My YARTS bus voucher was only good for one day, but who could resist exploring the heart of the park while I was so close on this West sierra adventure? I had my car, but I wanted to experience the Yart system so I didn’t make another reservation for my visit.
The YART is the only way into the park this coming summer without a reservation or staying in the Park. Pick up in front of the Bucks Meadow restaurant at 8:42 am and off to the park we go.  Exiting the bus at Curry Village at 10:10 am, I now have  5-7 hours of Valley walking, bus hopping and exploring to enjoy before catching the Shuttle back into Groveland and driving the long 4-hour trip home.

Bridal Veil Falls Yosemite

Yosemite Valley, with its iconic waterfalls, promised and delivered a grand finale to this three-day adventure. El Cap. and Half Dome, legendary rock faces, are in my sights all day. Quick hikes up to Vernal Falls and Back down to Mirror Pond before catching the Shuttle back to Bridal Veil Falls new observation deck. I wish after a day of awe-inspiring sights, I’d be able to see the sunset from Glacier Point before heading back to the Tahoe region, but when you are on shuttle time, things like watching the star come out are not on this adventure-filled trip. Deciding to Catch the earlier Shuttle, I was back in Groveland at 5:15, grabbed a quick bite at the dinner and exited town back towards Jackson and across Highway 88 to the Carson Valley. As luck would have ti, Ebbett’s pass opened up and I detoured over one of my favorite Scenic routes and a little less traffic than I was experiencing on the 49.

Groveland, my cozy base camp, had been the perfect launching pad for exploring Yosemite’s diverse grandeur.
