A Sierra Adventure Awaits

As the first rays of summer sun warms over the Sierra Nevada, the call of adventure echoes in my soul. This year, I’m starting off summer by trading the city’s hustle and bustle for the refreshing embrace of Lake Almanor, a crown jewel surrounded by the towering pines of Plumas County . My journey begins at the iconic St. Bernard Lodge, a welcomed haven of rustic charm and the perfect basecamp for exploring the region’s boundless beauty and recreational opportunities.

Fueling the Competitive Spirit

My trip coincides with the electrifying Bass Anglers BAM Trail Fishing Tournament (May 28 – June 2). While I may not be a seasoned angler, the energy and camaraderie of such events are contagious. I’ll have media access, so stay tuned for updates on the fierce competition and the eventual crowning of the champion! Who knows, I might even snag an interview with a triumphant angler fresh off the weigh-in. I am certain to find an award winning shot of the lake at the very least and enjoy life along the shorelines.

Beyond the Tournament: Summer Delights

But Lake Almanor offers much more than just fishing. My days will be filled with a delightful mix of activities. I imagine gliding across the crystal-clear water on a paddleboard, taking in the breathtaking scenery from a unique perspective. Lassen Volcanic National Park beckons with its geothermal wonders and dramatic landscapes in the backdrop. Hiking Lassen Peak, a true test of endurance, might be on the agenda depending on the snow pack (safety first!). And for a taste of history and culture, I’ll delve into the Caribou Wilderness, a place teeming with stories whispered on the wind.

Evenings Under the Stars

Evenings at St. Bernard Lodge promise to be just as enchanting. Picture yourself unwinding at the bar after a home cooked meal for dinner, or kicking back on the back patio next to the pond, sharing stories with fellow adventurers, and gazing at a star-studded sky unblemished by city lights. The tranquility of the mountains, the sound of crickets and frogs chirping, and silence of mountain community nights – pure summer bliss. All if it capped off with a comfortable night’s sleep in the lodges spacious European style rooms. And a great made to order lodge breakfast the next morning before starting another adventure trip.

A Celebration of Local Heritage

The trip takes an exciting turn with the Big Time Logging Jamboree happening right in Chester Park the same weekend (June 1). This lively event is a chance to immerse myself in the rich logging history of the region. Witnessing the lumberjack competitions, indulging in delicious food from local vendors, and learning about the Maidu Summit Consortium’s efforts to preserve the Mountain Maidu culture – it promises to be a day filled with cultural immersion and friendly competition. In this region of California the people really enjoy celebrating the heritage of the people that have long called the feather river watershed home.

A Summer Unforgettable

This Lake Almanor adventure is more than just a trip; it’s a celebration of summer. It’s about embracing the thrill of competition, the tranquility of nature, and the unique charm of small-town life.
