Feather River Land trust will be celebrating 23 years – Olsen Barn Tours

Olsen Barn in Chester California – Feather River Land trust

Also happening in Chester on Saturday the The Feather River Land trust will be celebrating 23 years with a free snow shoe or ski tour at the Olsen Barn Meadow. One of the most Photographed places in Plumas County .

Just a stone’s throw from downtown Chester, the Olsen Barn Meadow is a scenic 107-acre Preserve. It lies within an Audubon-designated Important Bird Area with unique bird sightings year-round.

The North Fork Feather River on the southern boundary of the Preserve provides an idyllic setting for picnicking, fishing, and swimming on warm days. The Olsen Barn, a Plumas County Historic Landmark, is an impressive example of 1800s craftsmanship with its massive hand-hewn timbers.

The Olsen Barn was built between 1860 and 1880 by Peter Olsen, a Norwegian immigrant who raised dairy cattle during the Gold Rush. He was known in his day as a master barn builder.

Today, the Olsen Barn, one of the oldest standing barns in Northern California, is a testament to Olsen’s barn building skills.

Getting to Chester

If Chester sounds like a great road trip for the weekend, we suggest a drive up Highway 89 from Truckee through Quincy and then North on 89 as the highways part and the 70 continues through Feather river canyon. (which at this time is still closed from Landslides from the January storms.)

Stops along the way can include the Quincy Candy co, Indian Falls ( a short .3 mile hike down to the waterfall) , stop and support the town of Greenville as they are rebuilding from the Dixie fire and then along the West shore of Lake Almanor enjoy the sights as you head into Chester.

Want to make it a long weekend and stay up north , there are many options in this region for finding a place to stay.
