Crowley Lake

The Story of Crowley Lake

Crowley Lake, created in 1941 by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), was formed as part of the Long Valley Dam and Reservoir project. Its purpose was twofold: to provide a reliable water source for Los Angeles and to serve as a key component in flood control for the Owens River. The lake’s name honors Father John Crowley, a Catholic priest known as the “Padre of the Desert,” who was beloved for his work supporting communities in the Owens Valley.

Beyond its engineered origins, Crowley Lake is steeped in geological intrigue. Its shores are home to fascinating volcanic features, including the famous Crowley Lake Columns—towering, naturally-formed pillars along the lake’s southern edge. These unique formations were created by volcanic activity millions of years ago, drawing photographers and geology buffs from around the world.
