Exploring the Sierra with Nikki Umatum: Founder of Venturing Out Guide Service
The Sierra Nevada is home to countless outdoor enthusiasts, but few bring as much heart and passion to their adventures as Nicole Umatum. Nikki, the founder of Venturing Out Guide Service in Truckee, California, joined us this week on the Sierra Rec Now Podcast to share her incredible journey and love for the mountains.
Nikki’s story began in San Francisco, where city life eventually gave way to her dream of guiding people into the Sierra’s pristine wilderness. Since launching Venturing Out in 2018, Nikki has specialized in creating memorable experiences for her guests, from carving paths in fresh snow on Donner Summit to leading multi-day backpacking trips in Desolation Wilderness.
We enjoyed a 30 minute conversation with Nikki discussing her favorites in the Lake Tahoe Region for both personal adventure and Guided experiences.

Nikki’s Favorite Destinations
Nikki loves introducing people to lesser-known gems in the Sierra:
- Jake’s Peak: A winter favorite where she snowboards after summiting.
- Dick’s Lake: A backpacker’s paradise, complete with a summer climb to the top of Dick’s Peak.
- Eagle Lake: A scenic escape into the heart of Desolation Wilderness.
When winter comes, Nikki adds a special touch to her guided snowshoeing treks with hot homemade soup served trailside—a highlight for many of her guests.
Beyond Desolation Wilderness
Nikki’s love for the outdoors extends beyond Desolation. She frequently explores Yosemite’s Tuolumne region for rock scrambles and adventures and enjoys the quiet beauty of the Yuba Pass area.
