In the Sierra, we don’t just celebrate one season at a time — we chase them both.
This weekend, Carson City and the Eastern Sierra are glowing with autumn color while snow-dusted peaks above Carson Valley whisper that ski season is just around the corner. It’s that sweet overlap where pumpkins meet powder — where costumes and hiking boots share the same trunk space.
As we raise a toast to Nevada’s statehood (October 31, 1864 – cheers to 161 years of Silver State adventure!), take a moment to explore the wide-open spaces that make this region so special. Whether you’re walking off a slice of candy corn or scouting your first turns of winter, the Sierra is wide open for you this weekend.
4 Local Trails to Explore
1. Ash to Kings Trail – Carson City
Distance: ~13 miles one way (car shuttle recommended) | Elevation Gain: 2,600 ft
This Carson City classic climbs from sagebrush hills into the high country of the Carson Range. The lower slopes are alive with late-season gold, while the ridgeline may already hold a dusting of snow. It’s a great leg-stretcher for hikers and bikers alike before winter fully arrives.

2. Jobs Peak Ranch Trail – Carson Valley
Distance: 5 miles round trip | Elevation Gain: 1,100 ft
Starting near Foothill Road, this local favorite winds through aspen groves and pine forest at the base of Jobs Peak. With crisp mountain air and sweeping valley views, it’s the perfect fall morning hike before the ski gear comes out.

3. Tahoe Rim Trail: Kingsbury North Trailhead to Castle Rock
Distance: 6 miles round trip | Elevation Gain: 900 ft
This moderate, forested climb leads to one of Tahoe’s best viewpoints — Castle Rock. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of Lake Tahoe’s deep blue waters framed by the first snow on the Carson Range. A great hike for the shoulder season, offering peace, granite, and views for days.

4. Winnemucca & Round Top Lakes – Carson Pass, Alpine County
Distance: 5 miles round trip | Elevation Gain: 1,000 ft
A late-season alpine classic, the trail from Carson Pass to Winnemucca Lake and on to Round Top Lake delivers crisp mountain air, early snow patches, and endless granite views. Expect cooler temps and maybe a frozen lake edge — the perfect reminder that winter is on its way.

Wherever your weekend takes you, celebrate Nevada Day with a little Sierra wanderlust — and maybe start tuning those skis. The mountains are calling, and the seasons are trading places right before our eyes.
