Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future: A Celebration of Community in Chester, California

On a sunny Saturday afternoon in Chester, California, a vibrant energy pulsed through the small community park. The Maidu Summit Consortium (MSC) hosted their annual “Big Time” Logging Jamboree, bringing together the tight-knit communities of Chester, Lake Almanor, and the Maidu Tribe in a joyous celebration of their shared history in Plumas County.

For me, a member of a family with deep roots in the logging industry, the event resonated on a personal level. It was a homecoming, a chance to connect with the past and celebrate the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to this demanding profession. But the Jamboree offered much more than just nostalgia.

A Tribute to Skill and Tradition

The spirit of community was on full display. The park buzzed with activity – live music filled the air, food vendors offered delicious treats (Carmel Popcorn, street tacos, and melt-in-your-mouth tri-tip sandwiches!), and friendly competition unfolded in the logging demonstrations. From skillful axe throwing and precise chainsaw cuts to thrilling crosscut saw races, participants of all skill levels showcased their talents, drawing cheers from an appreciative crowd.

The Jamboree wasn’t just about celebrating logging prowess; it was also a chance to acknowledge the Maidu Tribe’s long history with the land. The Maidu people have stewarded these forests for generations, and their traditional practices hold valuable lessons for sustainable forestry practices. The MSC, a consortium of nine Mountain Maidu tribes, is actively engaged in land restoration efforts, and the Jamboree served as a platform for potential collaboration between the loggers and the Maidu Tribe in future forest management endeavors.

Building Bridges and Lasting Memories

Beyond the logging demonstrations, the Jamboree fostered a sense of community. Families enjoyed the sunshine (a perfect 80 degrees with a gentle breeze!), kids devoured refreshing slushies, and the Quincy Girl’s softball team, visiting for a game, joined the local team in post-event festivities, sharing shaved ice and forging new friendships.

The Chester “Big Time” Logging Jamboree is a testament to the enduring power of community spirit. It’s a celebration of the past, a recognition of the present, and a hopeful bridge to a future where diverse voices collaborate to ensure the health and prosperity of the land and its people.
