Rodeo, Red Hills & the Spirit of the Sierra – It Motherlode Weekend in Sonora
There’s something about rodeo weekend in Sonora that brings the soul of the Sierra to life. Maybe it’s the dust kicking up behind a wild bronc at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds. Maybe it’s the parade horses clopping down Washington Street to cheers and country music. Or maybe—just maybe—it’s the way this Gold Country town wraps its arms around tradition, community, and the kind of weekend fun that makes memories for years to come.

Welcome to the 2025 Mother Lode Round-Up Rodeo
If you’re looking for an authentic Sierra weekend experience, look no further. The Mother Lode Round-Up Rodeo returns this Saturday and Sunday, May 10–11, and it’s ready to rumble.
With over 350 of pro rodeo’s best riders and ropers, this two-day PRCA-sanctioned event features all the big hits: bareback riding, barrel racing, bull riding, bronc busting, calf roping, steer wrestling, and team roping. It’s western grit, athleticism, and adrenaline at its finest.
The rodeo kicks off each day at 2:00 PM at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds, but the fun begins long before the gates open.
Saturday’s Main Event: The Parade
Head into downtown Sonora early Saturday morning and grab a spot along Washington Street for the 10:00 AM parade, where nearly 200 entries—marching bands, equestrian teams, historic floats, and rodeo queens—march through town in celebration. It’s one of the biggest and most colorful parades in the Sierra, and a local favorite you won’t want to miss.
Sunday: Kiddie Rodeo, Cowboy Church & a Hearty Mother’s Day Start
Make it a family day on Sunday with the Kiddie Rodeo at 12:30 PM, where the little buckaroos get in on the action—think mutton bustin’, stick horse races, and pint-sized cowpoke challenges that will melt your heart.
Fuel your day with the Mother’s Day Breakfast (8:00–11:00 AM) in the Manzanita Building at the fairgrounds, and if you’re looking for a quiet, reflective moment, Cowboy Church at 10:00 AM in the grandstands offers a relaxed, faith-filled service with a western flair.
Tickets:
- Adults: $25 at the gate | $20 pre-sale from Queen Contestants
- Kids (7–12): $10 | Children under 7: FREE

Local Tips for a Full Sonora Weekend
Of course, if you’re coming into Sonora for the rodeo, there’s no reason to stop the adventure there. Sonora is one of our favorite Sierra towns for a reason—it’s packed with history, charm, and nearby outdoor treasures.
🌄 Morning Fuel at Willow Wisp Café
Start your day with a local favorite—Willow Wisp Café. Their hearty breakfast menu and homey feel make it a perfect pre-parade stop. Don’t skip the biscuits and gravy or their seasonal coffee specials.
🥾 Stretch Your Legs on Dragon Gulch Trail
Just above downtown Sonora, the Dragon Gulch Trail offers a peaceful, short hike with scenic views over the historic district. It’s a great place to get a little fresh air before heading into the bustle of rodeo festivities.

🌸 Red Hills Recreation Area in Bloom
If wildflowers are your thing (and let’s be honest, May is prime for it), take a side trip west to the Red Hills Area of Critical Environmental Concern. This rolling landscape of serpentine hills and vibrant spring blooms is a lesser-known gem that showcases the natural diversity of the Sierra foothills.
🛏️ Where to Stay
Sonora offers everything from historic inns and local B&Bs to comfy hotels and campgrounds. If you’re staying overnight, book early—rodeo weekend fills up fast! We love The Gunn House Hotel for its charm and proximity to downtown.
Celebrate Mother’s Day the Sierra Way
This weekend isn’t just for cowboys and cowgirls—it’s also Mother’s Day. And what better way to celebrate than with a heartfelt breakfast, a day full of rodeo excitement, and a Sierra sunset to cap it all off?
Whether you’re a longtime rodeo fan or just looking for an authentic Sierra experience, the Mother Lode Round-Up is a true Gold Country celebration that brings the whole town—and thousands of visitors—together in one unforgettable weekend.
