By Charlie Pankey, Sierra Rec Magazine

Eighteen years ago, when I first moved to the Sierra Nevada, I made it my mission to experience every quirky, wonderful, and unforgettable festival this region had to offer. One of the first stops? Virginia City. And two events in particular have shaped the way I see fall in Nevada ever since: the outrageous International Camel & Ostrich Races and, later in the season, the downright ridiculous Outhouse Races.

Camel races

Early September in Virginia City is something special. The historic streets are alive with laughter, dust, and the oddly thrilling spectacle of jockeys trying to guide camels, ostriches, zebras — even emus — around a racetrack carved into the hills above town. It’s part old-west, part circus, and 100% Nevada.

Mark Your Calendar: Sept. 5–7, 2025

Now in its 66th year, the Camel & Ostrich Races are back Friday through Sunday, September 5–7. And whether you’ve never been or it’s a fall tradition like it’s become for me, this event delivers a guaranteed good time for the whole crew.

What You’ll See:

  • Four races over three days, each with its own wild mix of riders and animals
  • A parade (Camel Hump on C Street) that brings the event right into town
  • Food trucks, local craft vendors, and a beer garden to keep the energy going
  • VIP, shaded, and bleacher seating to fit every comfort level
  • Free camel rides for the first 100 kids on Family Day (Sunday)

I’ve had the chance to cover this event several times as media, and I always walk away with great photos, unexpected laughs, and a deep appreciation for how Virginia City leans into its character.

Final Thoughts

There’s something timeless and totally refreshing about this event. It doesn’t take itself too seriously — and maybe that’s why it endures. For those of us lucky enough to call the Sierra Nevada home, it’s a fall kickoff tradition that reminds us why we love where we live. So whether it’s your first time or your fifteenth, make a weekend of it.

We’ll be sharing live updates from the fairgrounds this September, so follow along and say hello if you see us on the hill.
