As winter approaches, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are preparing for seasonal closures in some of their most popular areas. Cedar Grove, known for its dramatic cliffs and riverside tranquility, closed to the public on October 28th, with access cut off just east of Boyden Cavern on Highway 180. Tomorrow, October 30th, Mineral King—famous for its rugged high-altitude trails and stunning scenery—will also close for the season, with the gate closing just below Lookout Point.

What is Still Open in Sequoia and Kings Canyon?
While these closures are necessary to protect the park’s natural resources and infrastructure from harsh winter weather, there are still areas open for exploration throughout the winter months. Many sections of the parks, including the Giant Forest and the General Sherman Tree area, remain open year-round (weather permitting), allowing visitors to experience the majestic sequoias blanketed in snow—a truly unforgettable sight. The Foothills area, at lower elevations, also typically stays accessible through the winter, offering a chance to enjoy scenic trails and beautiful views with fewer crowds. However, be prepared for temporary closures due to snow and ice, which may limit access to certain areas.

Visitors should always check current road and weather conditions before planning a trip during winter, as snow chains or other winter gear may be required. Even in winter, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks offer unique beauty and experiences to those prepared for the seasonal conditions.
Thank you to the dedicated staff and rangers who made the 2024 season so memorable! We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Cedar Grove and Mineral King in the spring.
