Sierra Rec Now Podcast | Episode Feature: Hanna Beth Bryce

There’s something magical about a dream born in the shadow of the Sierra—especially when that dream becomes a movement that changes lives.

This week on the Sierra Rec Now podcast , we welcome Hanna Beth Bryce, founder of Dare to Be a Cowboy, a nonprofit rooted right here in Carson Valley. Hanna Beth’s story is more than just a tale of rodeos and ranching—it’s about vision, grit, and the power of believing you can make a difference from anywhere, even a small mountain town in Northern Nevada.

From the Valley to the Arena: A Mission Born at 16

At just 16 years old, Hanna Beth sketched out a logo and drafted a dream at her family’s kitchen table. A first-generation cowgirl with a deep love for horses and the rodeo, she quickly realized that the Western lifestyle—especially competitive rodeo—was out of reach for many young people without financial support or family ties to the sport. So, she decided to change that.

What started as a small idea blossomed into Dare to Be a Cowboy, a nonprofit now in its 11th year of helping first-generation cowboys and cowgirls find their way into the Western world through clinics, camps, competitions, and mentorship.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Hanna Beth isn’t just teaching kids how to rope or race barrels—she’s showing them how to believe in themselves. Through Dare to Be a Cowboy’s expanding programs—like the new Lucy’s Rookie Roundup Rodeo Camp (July 18–19 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds) and the summer-long Barrel Racing Saddle Series—kids of all backgrounds are discovering purpose, discipline, and community.

She even shares how one of her students, Lucy, helped dream up the idea of the upcoming rodeo camp—proving that the ripple effect of inspiration is alive and well in Carson Valley .

Why It Matters to the Sierra

At Sierra Rec Magazine, we champion the spirit of outdoor adventure and small-town resilience. Hanna Beth’s story reminds us that just like trails, dreams start somewhere—and often it’s the rugged paths that lead to the biggest rewards. Her work aligns perfectly with our mission to celebrate the people and places that make the Sierra Nevada so uniquely powerful.

More Than Rodeo: A Life of Purpose

Beyond the arena, Hanna Beth shares honestly about the ups and downs of life, the value of vulnerability, and how she’s used social media as a tool for authentic connection. She also creates journals, goal-setting planners, and resources for young athletes and dreamers alike—many of which help fund her nonprofit’s mission.

And if you’re wondering about her rodeo credentials? She’s a former high school national qualifier, an active weekend barrel racer, and yes—Moonshine, her beloved horse, is still racing beside her.
