Our Family Prepares for another Winter Adventure in Mammoth Lakes
As autumn gracefully exits the stage, my heart quickens with excitement because I know what’s just around the corner – winter in Mammoth Lakes. November is the time of year when the Eastern Sierra transforms into a snow-covered playground, with Mammoth traditionally starting is 400-inch average accumulations, offering endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. For our family, it is a season we eagerly anticipate, as it is not just about the thrilling activities but also about building a legacy of mountain lifestyle and outdoor recreation.
My love for winter in Mammoth Lakes goes beyond words. Fresh snow blanketing the landscape is a sight to behold, and the anticipation of snowshoeing and skiing adventures adds a touch of magic to our family’s life. But before we embark on these winter journeys, a significant amount of preparation is involved.
With season passes at Mammoth Mountain secure, My husband and I have our favorite runs on Mammoth Mountain, each with its unique charm. But with the littlest in tow most days, My days often involve many runs on the gentle greens at Main Lodge or at Canyon trying the Schoolyard Express (Chair 17). Our family can zip down runs like Little Bird, Ginger Bread, and School Yard.
As the oldest child in the family, our eight-year-old has been eyeing the more challenging runs lately, itching to explore the blues and even the occasional black diamond. We often find time in Wooly Woods enjoyable, but soon, I feel like the family might need to split up a bit on the day of skiing. It is a testament to their growing confidence and skill. Nevertheless, we treasure the family moments spent on the greens our five-year-old enjoys, like the leisurely Discovery (Chair 11) and the friendly slopes of Apple Pie, Sesame Street, or Road Runner. These runs are the perfect playground for our little one, offering safe adventures while instilling a love for the mountains.
Of Course, we do take advantage of the Kid’s group ski lesson in the mornings from time to time so that we can go out and enjoy our favorite runs on the mountain without the kids. Mammoth Mountains Kid program is excellent.

Preparing for Winter Adventures:
As much as we adore the snow, we understand the importance of proper preparation. Preparing for winter adventures starts long before the first flakes touch the ground. It is about equipping ourselves with the right gear, ensuring our safety, and setting the stage for memorable experiences.
1. Gear Check:
Our family’s gear is our lifeline during the winter season. We meticulously inspect our skis, snowshoes, and winter clothing to ensure they are in top shape. Properly waxed skis are essential for a smooth and exhilarating ride down the slopes, and we make sure they are tuned to perfection. We choose waxes that match the snow conditions, providing the ideal glide and control.
For our growing children, it is not just about sharpening their skills but also ensuring their gear fits perfectly. Kids seem to sprout overnight, and new boots, coats, thermal wear, and other winter essentials are regular purchases. It is a delightful ritual, watching them pick out new gear and witnessing their excitement as they prepare for the season.
2. Safety First:
Safety is paramount in winter adventures, especially with our children. We often sit down with them to discuss the importance of staying in safe, avalanche-free zones. It is a conversation that helps them understand the risks and encourages responsible decision-making. However, should we venture into the captivating backcountry ski options near Mammoth, we are sure to carry avalanche gear. Safety gear such as transceivers, shovels, and probes are non-negotiable when exploring the untamed beauty of the Eastern Sierra.
3. Teaching the Kids:
Our kids, aged 8 and 5, are already smitten with winter sports. We encourage them to participate in ski and snowshoeing lessons, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to enjoy these activities safely. Seeing their confidence grow as they tackle the slopes and trails is heartwarming. This is not just about nurturing a love for the outdoors but also about empowering them with the know-how to navigate the snowy terrain.
4. Building a Family Legacy:
One of the most cherished aspects of our mountain lifestyle is the family legacy we’re creating. We’re instilling in our children a love for the outdoors, an appreciation for nature, and the value of an active, healthy lifestyle. The memories we’re building are not just for this season but for a lifetime. Our kids already talk about returning to the Eastern Sierra for future winter adventures.
Living a Mountain Lifestyle:
Winter in Mammoth Lakes is not just a season; it is a way of life. We eagerly embrace the snow and the outdoor opportunities it offers. Whether exploring pristine trails on snowshoes or carving our way down the slopes, each winter adventure adds to the rich tapestry of our family’s experiences. It is about bonding, learning, and creating lasting memories against the backdrop of the Eastern Sierra’s winter wonderland.
So, as we prepare for the upcoming winter season, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and gratitude. Each gear check, safety measure, and skiing lesson is a step closer to the adventures that await. We’ll continue to pass down a tradition to our children, ensuring that the love for winter and the Eastern Sierra remains a part of our family’s legacy. Winter, we are ready for you!
Car Winter Travel and Maintenance:
Winter adventures in Mammoth Lakes call for more than just gearing up your family. Your vehicle should also be ready to navigate the snow-covered roads safely. My husband takes charge of this aspect, ensuring that our car is well-prepared for the winter season. Here are some essential tips he follows:
- Snow Tires: He swaps out our regular tires for snow tires, which provide better traction on icy roads. Remember to check the tire pressure regularly.
- Fluids and Maintenance: Keeping our car in top condition is a priority. This includes checking antifreeze levels, oil changes and ensuring all systems function well.
- Emergency Kit: We always carry an emergency kit in the car during winter. It includes essentials like blankets, a flashlight, non-perishable snacks, and a first-aid kit.
- Chains and Snow Removal Tools: Chains can be a lifesaver in heavy snow, so we ensure they are on hand. A small shovel and a brush for snow removal are also kept in the trunk.
- Battery Checks: The Eastern Sierra cold winters can be hard on the car battery. My husband ensures our battery is in good condition to avoid any unwelcome surprises.
Preparedness is key when it comes to winter travel. By taking these precautions and ensuring our vehicle is ready for winter, we can embark on our family adventures with peace of mind, knowing we are equipped for whatever the snowy season has in store.
