Built like a tank. Sized for your lunch. Perfect for every solo Sierra adventure.

By Charlie Pankey | Sierra Rec Magazine

Not every piece of gear has to be technical to earn a permanent spot in your summer kit. On a recent weekend fishing trip to Crowley Lake for Fishmas, I brought along the Pelican 8QT Personal Cooler—and by the end of the trip, it had already earned its stripes.

Whether you’re tossing gear in the back of the truck, bouncing around in a boat, or sneaking off on your paddleboard for a lakeside lunch , this little cooler is exactly what you’d hope for: tough, compact, and brilliantly functional.

Quick Verdict

The Pelican 8QT Personal Cooler is the perfect size for one or two adventurers heading out for a day on the water, trail, or highway. It held my lunch, snacks, and water with room to spare—and thanks to the smart internal tray and integrated lid ice pack, everything stayed fresh and uncrushed. Durable, secure, and easy to carry, this cooler has become a go-to piece of gear for fishing, road trips, and summer boondocking.
🧊 A personal-sized cooler that keeps your lunch cold and your gear safe—whether you’re reeling in trout or floating across a lake to find your own secret beach.

Where I Tested It

  • Fishmas 2024 Fishing Trip – Crowley Lake
  • Use Case: Personal lunch/snack cooler in a boat
  • Conditions: Cool spring weather, shifting light, lots of gear shuffling
  • Additional Drop Test: Dropped during unloading back at home (lid stayed locked, no scuffs)

Performance in the Field

🎣 Perfect for One (or Two) Adventurers

Let’s start with capacity. I packed a bottle of water, a sandwich, some fruit, and bars, and still had room left. The removable tray is a game-changer—kept my sandwich from getting squished under the heavy stuff, and the lid-mounted dry box let me stash a couple of small personal items I didn’t want rolling around in the boat. There’s definitely enough room to toss in a six-pack, but for solo or duo trips, this is the ideal setup.

❄️ Keeps It Cold Without Losing Space

Instead of taking up valuable room with ice packs, the Pelican 8QT uses a built-in ice pack in the lid—a smart use of space that keeps the inside free for food and drinks. My lunch stayed cold through a full day of casting lines.

🧱 Rugged Build That Actually Matters

This is where the Pelican name delivers. During our trip, I knocked over my partner’s Coleman cooler and the lid popped right off. Meanwhile, I kicked, bumped, and dropped my Pelican cooler multiple times throughout the day, and the latch stayed locked every single time. On the way back to the car, I tried carrying too much (as always), and dropped the cooler in the driveway—no scuffs, no cracks, and the lid stayed sealed.

✅ What I Loved

  • Compact but roomy enough for a full-day solo trip or lunch for two
  • Dry storage & tray keep things organized and crush-free
  • Secure latch system that won’t fly open in the boat or on the trail
  • Built-in ice pack saves space while keeping contents cold
  • Tough exterior that can take a drop without a dent
  • Perfect companion for paddleboarding, fishing, and boondocking

❌ What I’d Improve

  • Not for group-size cooling—but that’s not what it’s made for
  • Slightly heavier than soft coolers (but way more durable)

🎯 Who This Cooler is For

Perfect for:

  • Solo and duo anglers, hikers, or paddlers
  • Boaters and truck campers needing a small, rugged lunch cooler
  • Anyone who’s tired of soft coolers that flop, leak, or pop open
  • Weekend road warriors and boondockers
  • Campers who appreciate smart internal organization

Not ideal for:

  • Group meals or big cooler needs—this one’s for personal use
  • Ultralight backpackers (too bulky/heavy for overnight hikes)
