Lake Tahoe, CA/NV (Sierra Rec Magazine) – Good news for those who love Lake Tahoe but struggle to find affordable housing. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has launched the next phase of its “Tahoe Living” program, titled “Cultivating Community, Conserving the Basin.” This multi-year initiative aims to tackle the critical issue of workforce housing in the region while upholding environmental protections – a key concern for many residents.

The program recognizes the vital role local workers play in keeping the Tahoe Basin vibrant. However, the current housing market often pushes these essential workers to live far from their jobs, creating long commutes and straining the environment. TRPA Executive Director Julie Regan acknowledges this, stating, “Some unintended consequences [of past policies] are seriously impacting local workers… This initiative will lead the basin forward with policies that protect our environment, improve community connections, and revitalize our communities.”

Cultivating Community aims to address these challenges by updating regional land-use regulations with a focus on disadvantaged communities. A key aspect will be revamping the existing development rights system, which has favored larger homes and resorts over smaller, more affordable housing options. TRPA Chief Operating Officer John Hester emphasizes the importance of this reform: “Revamping our development rights system is key to creating more affordable housing in the region.”

Public participation is crucial to the success of the program. TRPA is encouraging residents, workers, and other stakeholders to attend upcoming community workshops in September. These workshops will provide a platform for attendees to learn more about the program, share their experiences with housing challenges, and provide valuable input. Spanish interpretation, activities for children, and refreshments will be offered at both the South Shore and North Shore workshops.

Here’s how you can get involved:

The project’s first community workshops will be held September 9 and 10 and will provide an opportunity for residents, workers, and other stakeholders to learn more about Cultivating Community and share input on the most pressing housing issues in the region. The project team will make Spanish interpretation available at both the South and North Shore workshops. Activities for children and refreshments will be provided.
