Latest Snow Closes Lassen Volcanic National Park to Vehicle Traffic
Winter has arrived in Northern California, and with it comes the closure of the main park road (Hwy 89) through Lassen Volcanic National Park. As of November 13th, 2024, you can’t drive all the way through the park. This also marks the time in which Bumpass Hell Trail closes for winter as well.
We can tell you from experience however that this time of years is a great time to visit the park, with smaller crowds and the magical wonders of snow on the volcanic peaks around the park the park is one of our staffs favorite winter wonderlands.

This doesn’t mean Lassen is closed for the season. It just means you’ll need to adjust your plans a bit.
Here’s the scoop: The road closures currently extend from the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center (southwest entrance) and Loomis Plaza/Manzanita Lake (northwest entrance). With more snow on the horizon, this might be the official closure for the season.
This just means it’s time to break out the skis, snowshoes, or even your trusty sled. Both the Manzanita Lake Area and the Southwest Area offer fantastic opportunities for oversnow exploration.
Manzanita Lake: Calling all beginner and intermediate snowshoers and cross-country skiers! Manzanita Lake boasts gentle slopes and scenic vistas, making it the perfect place to hone your skills or simply enjoy a leisurely winter wonderland experience.
Southwest Area: Feeling adventurous? The Southwest Area offers steeper slopes and sweeping vistas for experienced backcountry skiers and snowshoers. Just remember, this area is best for those comfortable with winter travel and potential avalanche dangers.

Ranger lead snowshoe treks will begin January this winter. Ranger-led snowshoe walks are offered on the weekends at the Southwest Area beginning January 6th through March*, 2024. Snowshoes are provided for visitors age 8 and older for the duration of the ranger-led walk.
If you plan to snowshoe in the park, please note:
Pets are not permitted on snow-covered routes. Leashed pets are permitted in parking areas.
Snowshoe rentals are not available in the park. See below for additional locations that offer snowshoe rental.
Winter route conditions are updated as available.
Oversnow travel in the park involves risk. Learn more about winter safety including avalanche safety, recreating in a remote area, and route selection.
Winter Camping: Looking to extend your snowy stay? The Southwest Campground is open year-round, allowing you to camp in your vehicle or pitch a tent (with the proper winter camping gear, of course). Backcountry camping is also an option for experienced adventurers with a backcountry permit.
Important Reminders:
- Always check the latest park conditions and weather forecast before heading out: https://www.nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisit/conditions.htm
- Bumpass Hell Trail is already closed for the season due to snow and treacherous conditions.
- Be prepared for winter weather conditions with proper clothing and gear.
So, while the main road might be closed, Lassen Volcanic National Park still offers a winter wonderland waiting to be explored. Lace up your boots, grab your skis, and get ready for a snowy adventure!
