Living in the Carson Valley for 17 years, I finally conquered the summit of Genoa Peak! What a thrill it was to discover an off-road route that replaced miles of strenuous hiking.
Genoa Peak offers a challenging yet rewarding off-road adventure climbing to 9’152 feet, culminating in breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Tahoe, the Carson Valley, Heavenly Ski Resort, and even a glimpse into Washoe Valley to the north. The sparkling waters of Lake Tahoe serve as a stunning backdrop for this exciting day trip, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts seeking an adrenaline rush.

Gear Up and Hit the Trail
Before embarking on our adventure, I performed a thorough inspection of my Chevy Avalanche, ensuring proper tire pressure, oil levels, and a clear undercarriage for optimal performance. As expected, a four-wheel drive (4WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle with ample ground clearance is essential for tackling this trail.
We opted for the Genoa Peak Road (14N32) route via the Spooner Summit access point, a roughly 9-mile journey across the Carson Range. This route provided a diverse and captivating experience, transitioning from sagebrush flats to towering pine forests, rocky landscapes dotted with manzanita bushes, and finally, a weathered, exposed peak. A Summit to Remember
Reaching the summit of Genoa Peak is a significant accomplishment, especially considering the challenging final climb that requires a capable 4WD vehicle. However, the reward is a designated parking area just below the peak, offering an exceptional vantage point to soak in the breathtaking panorama. We found several OHV vehicles and motor bike son the peak today, plus passed a group of ultra marathoners running a race over the same course. The area is stunning the entire tri with Aspens. meadows, overlooks and dense forests along the route.
Imagine gazing westward and witnessing the vast expanse of the Carson Valley unfold before you. To the east, Lake Tahoe shimmers like a sapphire jewel, nestled amidst the majestic backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This awe-inspiring vista will leave you speechless.
We spent a considerable amount of time exploring the summit, capturing unforgettable photographs, and simply reveling in the crisp mountain air and the sense of accomplishment. It was an experience we’ll cherish forever. The climb from the parking area to the peak is a bit unorthodox rock climb. definitely recommend sturdy shoes.
