Reno NV – This weekend, the skies above Reno Stead Airport will come alive with the thunderous roar of jet engines, marking the 60th anniversary of aviation history in Reno. But this year’s Reno Air Show isn’t just a celebration of local legacy; it’s a unique event that brings together milestones in aviation from around the world. From the iconic F-16 Fighting Falcon to the Royal Canadian Air Force’s centennial, this year’s air show will be one for the ages—and you won’t want to miss it.

A Weekend of Milestones
Among the exciting highlights of this weekend’s event is the 50th anniversary of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, affectionately known as “The Viper.” The USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team will commemorate this anniversary with a special appearance, flying a Falcon painted in tribute to the original colors that first graced the sky. Fans of military aviation will be in for a treat, as this sleek, nimble jet takes center stage in a demonstration that will honor its legacy and performance.
Also celebrating a major milestone is the Royal Canadian Air Force, which turns 100 years old this year. The famed Canadian Forces Snowbirds will perform in honor of this centennial, showcasing their incredible precision flying. For fans of aerial acrobatics, the Snowbirds’ formation flying across the deep blue Nevada skies will be an awe-inspiring sight, and their presence here in Reno makes this year’s show even more special.

Blue Angels and Snowbirds Together: A Rare Opportunity
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this year’s Reno Air Show is that it will be the only show in North America in 2024 to feature both the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds performing in tandem. This combination of premier jet teams at a single event is not only rare but historic, offering fans a chance to witness aerial maneuvers that will leave them breathless. Whether you’re a longtime air show enthusiast or new to the world of aviation, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see two of the world’s most celebrated aerial teams fly together in a display of international cooperation and shared love for the skies.
A Personal Connection: Reno’s History of Aviation Excellence
Sierra Rec Magazine has had the honor of covering air shows across Northern Nevada for over a decade, including many incredible performances by the Blue Angels right here in the Carson Valley. While the Blue Angels‘ unmistakable roar and their thrilling simulated dogfights will be missed in our home base this year, Reno Stead Airport has a rich tradition of exceptional air shows. As the former home of the Reno Air Races, Stead has long been a hub for aviation enthusiasts, and this weekend’s air show serves as a worthy successor to that storied past.

In addition to the Blue Angels and Snowbirds, the show will feature an impressive lineup of performers, including the USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team and many more. Friday, October 4th, kicks off with an exciting evening show, with gates opening at 4 PM (note: the Blue Angels will not be performing that evening). Saturday and Sunday, October 5th and 6th, will host full-day shows where all aircraft are expected to take to the skies.

This weekend’s Reno Air Show promises to be a historic event that aviation fans and families alike will be talking about for years to come. Whether you’re drawn by the precision and power of the Blue Angels, the elegance of the Snowbirds, or the groundbreaking legacy of the F-16 Viper, this show has something for everyone.
