South Lake Tahoe, CA/NV (July 17, 2024): Following concerns about a dog’s death potentially linked to harmful algal blooms (HABs), recent water quality testing at Lake Tahoe beaches has yielded positive results for pet owners and recreational enthusiasts.

No HAB Toxins Detected in Lake Water:
The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) conducted water sampling at El Dorado Beach (CA) and Nevada Beach (NV) on July 8th and 10th. Lab results for both locations came back negative for toxins associated with HABs, indicating the lake water itself is safe for swimming and other recreational activities.
Isolated Pond Advisory:
While no HABs were found in the main lake body, a sample collected from a shallow pond adjacent to Nevada Beach did contain a very low level of a cyanotoxin called saxitoxin. This pond is not connected to the lake and is already partially fenced off. Officials are recommending additional fencing to further restrict access for both pets and humans.
El Dorado Beach Advisory Lifted:
The previous advisory at El Dorado Beach has been lifted, and NDEP has confirmed the lake itself is safe for swimming in Nevada as well. However, a “HAB Watch” advisory remains in effect for the isolated pond at Nevada Beach.

Enjoying Tahoe Responsibly:
The public is encouraged to remain vigilant when visiting any waterbody. Here are some tips for a safe and enjoyable experience:
- Practice healthy water habits: Avoid swallowing lake water and showering with clean water after swimming.
- Be aware of HABs: Learn how to identify these blooms and report suspected occurrences to the appropriate authorities. (https://ndep.nv.gov/)
- Keep pets safe: Limit their drinking from the lake and avoid areas with potential HAB presence.
Dog Death Investigation Continues:
The California Interagency Harmful Algal Bloom-related Illness Workgroup is still investigating the cause of the dog’s death. While water samples did not detect HAB toxins, the investigation will consider all available data, including interviews and health information.
Lake Tahoe remains a beautiful destination for swimming, boating, and other recreational activities. By following these guidelines and staying informed, visitors can enjoy the lake responsibly and safely.
