Ash Fire Update
Golden Trout Wilderness, Inyo national Forest , June 17, 2016 – The Ash fire, ignited by lightning and detected on June 12th, has slowly grown to approximately 110 acres. The fire is burning in the Golden Trout Wilderness on the north side of Ash creek.
Smoke is visible from Highway 395 just north of Olancha and possibly from Lone Pine. Please do not report this fire.
There continues to be no threat to life or property. Fire personnel will hike into the fire today to assess fire behavior and spread potential and helicopters will continue to use bucket drops to cool hot spots. The Ash fire is burning in a mixture of mahogany, pinyon pine, and Jeffery pine at an elevation of 8,500 feet.
Observed fire behavior over the past few days has been minimal to moderate, mostly smoldering in dead and down material with occasional tree torching. The terrain in the area of the fire is very steep and difficult to access. Firefighter safety is priority, and a confine/contain strategy is being used to manage the fire.
There are 2 helicopters and 20 fire personnel committed to the Ash fire.
